This is one of 28 paintings in the Upper Church dedicated to the Legend of St Francis, 25 of which were painted directly by the leading artist of the early Renaissance, Giotto. St Francis is seen kneeling in prayer for spring water to save the life of a travelling farmer. The commentary implied by the silent glance between the two observing monks gives real animation and character to this portrayal. This fresco can be seen on the entrance wall which, however, was badly damaged in the 1997 earthquake at Assisi.
