Masolino worked with his contemporary Masaccio to paint the church of Santa Maria del Carmine on behalf of the chapel’s then patrons, the Brancacci family. Some of the scenes in this large fresco cycle were later repainted in 1481 by Filippino Lippi. Like Uccello, both Masolino and Masaccio shared a great love of the science of perspective in art composition. The architectural lines in this typical Florentine piazza are precisely structured and the Colonnade draws the public’s eye to the detail of the symmetrical buildings in the background that beautifully silhouette the figure of St Peter.
