The Berlin Wall

During the summer of 1990, after the collapse of the East German regime, artists covered the kilometre-long stretch of the Berlin wall on Mühlenstrasse with colourful murals re-telling German history and promoting slogans of peace. The East Side Gallery was born. Some of the murals have become famous in their own right, such as Dmitri Vrubel's "Bruderkuss", painted in 1990, portraying a fraternal kiss between former Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and East German Prime Minister Eric Honecker. Despite a partial restoration of the East Side Gallery in 2000, the murals are gradually disintegrating and will eventually disappear unless a full-scale restoration is launched.
